Character history: Zack was born in Gongaga and dreamed of being a SOLDIER First Class like the Great Sephiroth. He joined Shinra to fulfill his dream and attained the rank of Soldier Second Class under the tutelage of Angeal. The war in Wutai is where he first came to the notice of those higher up in Shinra. He also had his first encounter with Sephiroth during that war and its aftermath. Before his mission to Wutai, Zack also discovers that Genesis, childhood friend of Zack’s mentor Angeal and friend of Sephiroth as well, has deserted Shinra along with several lower ranking SOLDIERS.
After Wutai, he goes on a mission to Banora where Angeal and Genesis were born. He discovers a bit more about Angeal and Genesis and confronts Genesis for the first time. Essentially, Angeal has left Shinra with Genesis. The ensuing arguments and fights lead to Banora being bombed to hell and back. Zack leaves. Soon, Zack attains the rank of SOLDIER 1st Class like he always dreamed but the price to achieve it was very high. Shortly after achieving the rank he always wanted, Zack is involved in a citywide fight against Genesis’ troops. He and Sephiroth are sent to the Sector 5 Reactor in search of Dr. Hollander. The doctor is a rogue scientist who once worked for the Shinra science department.
During the hunt for Hollander, Zack and Sephiroth share stories of Angeal after discovering a clone that has Angeal’s face. Genesis clones or ‘copies’ have already shone up previously and this is just further proof that Angeal is in league with his childhood friend. The searching of the Sector 5 Reactor leads to information about Hollander’s experiments on Genesis and Project G. Eventually, Zack fights Angeal and ends up thrown down into a church. There he meets Aerith for the first time. After a discussion of flowers, Zack and Aerith actually end up going on a date. The date is interrupted when Zack must go fight Genesis yet again. This time he works with Angeal and the last thing he sees right then of his former mentor is Angeal locked in combat with Genesis.
Zack’s next mission for Shinra involves going to the town of Modeoheim with Tseng, a Turk, and several Shinra infantry. One of those infantry is a young man named Cloud Strife. Zack and Cloud become fast friends on the trek through the mountains and battles that follow on the way to Modeoheim. Once again, Zack encounters Genesis and Hollander in the mountains. Genesis falls off the side of the mountain and Zack assumes he is dead. Angeal shows up and Zack learns how Hollander experimented on his former mentor. Angeal combines with copies of himself and Zack kills the twisted monster that results. Afterwards, Angeal is alive long enough to hand his treasured Buster Sword over to Zack with the admonishment that Zack never give up on his dreams or honor.
After the death of Angeal, Zack becomes one of the best leaders and heroes among the SOLDIERs First Class that are left alive. He spends time training new recruits and passing along wisdom, he learned from Angeal. The next important mission Zack goes on involves Cloud, Sephiroth, and Nibelheim. Shinra sends them to Nibelheim to fix and investigate the Reactor nearby. What they find there is Jenova who is supposedly Sephiroth’s mother. Zack tries to pull Sephiroth away from the man’s frantic reading in the library of the Shinra mansion. Eventually, Sephiroth comes out of the mansion and is batshit insane thanks to Jenova as well as his own origins from Project Jenova. Zack can’t stop Sephiroth from killing most of the townspeople at Nibelheim or from burning the entire town to the ground. In the ensuing battle, Zack manages to match Sephiroth for a time before being defeated. Cloud fights and defeats Sephiroth in fit of anger.
Afterwards,
Cloud and Zack are both ‘rescued’ by Shinra and become an experiment in Hojo’s lab.
When Zack wakes up and breaks out of the container hold him, he frees himself as well as Cloud. Zack carries a comatose Cloud who is suffering from heavy mako addiction. Zack gets them both away from Nibelheim and hides out from Shinra. Zack eventually meets up with Lazard and Hollander again. Together, they defeat Hollander once and for all. Afterwards, Zack realizes Genesis has his base of operation in Banora. He travels there and leaves Cloud in Lazard’s hands. Zack goes down to confront Genesis and finally defeats him. With Cloud in tow, Zack returns to Midgar and finds a very large Shinra army blocking his path. Zack hides Cloud and takes on the army. He is killed but managed to stay alive just long enough to hand off his Buster Sword to Cloud, who finally wakes up enough to come to him.
As Zack lies dying, he sees Angeal flying out of the sky on white wings. Zack reaches toward him with the desire to have wings just like Angeal. His final question is if he became a hero. Thus, Zack lived and died as a hero. He becomes part of the Lifestream but still appears to Cloud from time to time in the years following his death.
Character personality: Zack is cocky, headstrong, and always willing to fight for what he believes is right. He has little concept of self-preservation when it comes to the people he cares about Zack will go to the ends of the earth to protect his friends or try to save his friends who have fallen. In general, Zack is optimistic and playful. He can be clueless but he means well. When he finds himself in a prison setting, he will be down and angry about it. He will also try to discover why he is incarcerated and try to find a way to be free or at the least – released.
Physical description: Zack is six feet tall and in top physical condition. He has dark hair that is in spikes along his face and down his back. His blue eyes are bright due to the infusion of mako energy he takes from being a SOLDIER. Generally, Zack is athletic and very attractive.
Magical powers or special skills: Zack’s blood is charged with mako energy, which gives him higher speed and strength than a normal human and allows him to heal faster. He is trained in hand-to-hand combat, sword use, and weaponry. All of the above allows him to be a better soldier. His magical power comes from his ability to use materia. All of his abilities to heal himself or others instantly, use elemental powers such as fire like a weapon, and cure various aliments like poison are tied into what material he has equipped on his person at any given time. Zack’s ability to summon large devastating creatures such as Bahamut is linked to having the right materia as well.
